Teaching Halloween to young learners is easy: craft a paper pumpkin, teach "Trick or Treat", and play a vocabulary matching game.

Teaching Halloween to older learners? That’s a completely different challenge.

Teenagers and adult learners often find traditional seasonal materials patronising or irrelevant. However, October is the ultimate opportunity to introduce high-level vocabulary, speculative language and debate skills using atmospheric themes.

If you want to bring Halloween into your ESL classes this October without making your students cringe, here are three high-impact lesson ideas.

1. Halloween speaking activity: The psychology of phobias (B1 - C1)

Instead of focusing on monsters, focus on real human fears. This topic opens up incredible opportunities for sophisticated adjectives and expressing degrees of certainty.

  • Warm-up: Show a list of unusual phobias (e.g., Nomophobia – fear of being without a phone; Coulrophobia – fear of clowns). Have students guess what they mean.
  • Target language: Adjectives describing emotion (paralysed, unsettled, irrational, terrified) and qualifying structures ("To a certain extent...", "I find it completely illogical, yet...").
  • Discussion task: In pairs, students rank 5 common phobias from "most understandable" to "least understandable" and justify their choices.

2. Halloween ESL activity: Fact vs. urban legend (B2)

Adults love mystery and storytelling. Use short urban legends to practice deduction and speculation in the past (must have been, could have happened, can't have been).

  • The setup: Present a short, spooky story based on a real mystery or a famous urban legend (e.g., The Mary Celeste or The Vanishing Hitchhiker).
  • The task: Divide the class into small groups. Give them 3 pieces of "evidence" (short text snippets or pictures) and ask them to formulate their own theory of what actually happened.
  • Grammar focus: Force the use of modal verbs of deduction in the past ("The crew must have left in a hurry because the food was still on the table.").

3. Halloween mystery activity for advanced ESL: A mini true-crime inquiry (C1)

True crime podcasts are wildly popular among adult learners. Capitalise on this trend by running a communicative mini-inquiry lesson.

  • The activity: Give students a short case summary with 3 suspects, each with a motive and an alibi.
  • Roleplay: Students work in pairs (investigator and suspect) using functional language for questioning, defending an argument and identifying inconsistencies.
  • Language focus: Idioms related to mystery and suspicion (to smell a rat, to take something with a pinch of salt, over my dead body).

Keep it relevant, keep it communicative.

You don't need costumes or plastic spiders to make October lessons memorable. By anchoring seasonal topics in psychology, mystery, and debate, your adult students will get genuine language practice that feels sophisticated and enjoyable.

Preguntas frecuentes

Should you celebrate Halloween with adult English students?

Yes, but focus on higher-level discussion topics like phobias, psychology, urban legends or true crime rather than childish games or simple vocabulary.

What are good Halloween topics for B2 and C1 students?

Topics like "The Psychology of Fear", evaluating urban legends, debating controversial horror tropes or solving mini-mystery cases work exceptionally well.

How can I teach Halloween vocabulary to advanced learners?

Focus on sophisticated adjectives (e.g., eerie, spine-chilling, grotesque) and idioms related to fear and mystery, rather than basic nouns like pumpkin or ghost.
